Do you know that a lot of the state parks now offer cabin (or a variation of such, ie yurt) rentals?!? My family has always leaned more towards tent camping so I was surprised to see so many options when we were researching our last few camping trips. When my husband reached his frustration level researching rental options for our Valentine's day mini retreat, I suggested that he check out what was available at the state parks. If you haven't guessed by now I was shocked and thrilled with what he found for us!
He ultimately decided to do a cabin at FDR State Park and we are taking several ideas from it for our little retirement home! There are more than 20 cabins to choose from as well as a variety of views from the mountain down to the lake. He had reserved a 1 bedroom, 2 fireplace cabin on the mountain. It was truly breathtaking and amazingly cozy. We brought all our food with us for our 2 night stay and everything we needed was there including dishes and cookware. We did go out to Pine Mountain once to get paper towels, coffee filters and fire starters. (If you plan to have fires they do require local firewood only so as to not introduce out of area pest that may be hiding in the wood.) The local town offers tons of options for shopping and exploring as well as may restaurants to choose from but with 6 kids at home we were looking forward to the peace and quiet. Our stay was during a cold spell so we enjoyed the view from the dining table during meals but the rockers on the porch will be perfect to watch the sun rise and set during the warmer periods.
We have done our fair share of escapes but this definitely has been my favorite and for it to be so close to home makes it an even better gem!
