Watson's Tree Farm - Making Memories and Traditions

5 Reasons to go to a tree farm.

By Heather Raulston, Editor & Publisher of Macaroni Kid Columbus December 12, 2020

We love Watson's Christmas Tree Farm for several reasons but this year they have really blessed me.  Y'all, we have officially found the most beautiful Christmas tree of my life!  I have been tickled pink with purchases over my years of shopping, but this tree tops them all.  I don't say that lightly either.

This year has sucked all the way around in so many ways.  I have wanted this Christmas to be special, to sort of end the year on a good note, so I have been really looking forward to getting our tree.  Normally we are the last minute type.  So last minute that my husband pulled a "Clark Griswold" last year and cut the top out of one of our trees in the front yard. (In his defense it was Christmas Eve and I'm very grateful that we live out in the woods with no HMO's to worry about.)  This year we waited patiently for Watson's to officially open for the season and fought the urge to make a special appointment before Thanksgiving.  December 1st found us loading up in our 2 vehicles and heading to the outskirts of Ellaville, Ga.

Here's my 5 reasons to go to a tree farm versus a tree lot or store:

  1. Make new memories and traditions!  It is so much fun to bundle up and go tree hunting.   We really missed our trip last year and the kids were so excited to go again.  We chose to cut our own and the kids fussed about who's turn it was to use the saw.  We even brought our 4 month old pup to join the fun.
  2. Get out of town!  It is so refreshing to get out and leave the hustle of the city behind.  Plan to make it a day trip and stop in one of the many hometown restaurants along the way.  Go the extra mile to travel back in time and drive the speed limit for the old "Sunday drive" feel.
  3. Sunshine is always a good thing!  Getting outside has been harder with all the quarantines and closures.  Spending the time outdoors improved everyone's moods and is known to be the best disinfectant. It was awesome to hear the kids laughing as they played a little hide and seek between the trees.
  4. Support local small town businesses.  The more we can support our local favorites the better life will be for everyone.  It is a loop that improves the community as a whole.  When we shop local stores they have more money to spend local and they pay taxes on those funds.  Local taxes go to improve our communities not some distant mega city where the big box headquarters are.
  5. The smell!!  Seriously, this has been the best air freshener by far.  We have bought from the tree lots before but nothing compares to the freshness of cutting your own!

Useful information for Watson's Christmas Tree Farm:

  • Watson's Farm is an hour plus ride from Columbus so be sure to scope out your route and dining options.  You'll want to verify hours and availability for the day you choose to go.
  • It is outdoors so dress appropriately for the weather and in layers.  Also wear good shoes as the ground is uneven in places.
  • You can choose from 3 types of trees to cut or they offer Frasier Firs from North Carolina.
  • You can bring your own tools or they will cut the tree for you.  After the tree is cut they bring it to the shop, shake and package it and help to load it on your vehicle.
  • Large families are not discriminated against.  My husband and I had our 6 kids ages 12 down to 2 months, our 3yo niece and our 4 month German Shephard.  Extra safety precautions have been an added nightmare for our family so this was another breath of fresh air.
  • They offer an open air wagon tour if you would like to take it.  This will be cooler than just walking so, again, layering clothes is a good idea.
  • There is a gift shop with local goodies and souvenirs.
